Sanitation Problem 8

Poor access to data!

opendata

The situation

In many countries there are no centralized, comprehensive and regularly updated databases available on water and sanitation sectors. This results in duplication and decreased productivity. Whatever data is available cannot be verified as different organizations use different definitions for water and sanitation coverage, access, output, outcome and quality. Hundreds of NGOs working in this sector have little or no coordination, which results in decreased efficiency. Sometimes, it is difficult for policy makers to understand the size of a sanitation problem since they are not directly affected.

Some ways your app could help:

  • Using crowd sourcing to improve data collection and management
  • Integrating API frameworks to a web application serving data from a database
  • Improving real-time access to data
  • Better visualization of key problem areas for policy makers
